A dozen senior citizens injured after bus on shopping trip hit in West Palm

WEST PALM BEACH -- A bus carrying senior citizens from the Golden Lakes neighborhood was broad-sided Thursday morning by a Speedy Rooter truck, sending 12 people to the hospital, police said.

The bus, which is operated by the Jewish Community Center, was in the 7800 block of Okeechobee Boulevard when it was struck about 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

Seven people were taken to Palms West Hospital. Five were transported to St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach, two of them carried in by the Trauma Hawk helicopter.

JCC spokesman Scott Benarde said the center operates the bus for the Golden Lakes senior community.

"It's a little bus route to the store and grocery shopping," Benarde said. "It was not a JCC event."

He said the bus driver, a JCC employee, was fine but could not immediately provide his name.

Juan Lopez, the owner of Speedy Rooter in West Palm Beach, was not immediately available for comment. But an employee confirmed the truck driver was upset but fine.

Witnesses said the bus was eastbound on Okeechobee and may have run a red light. The bus appeared to be turning from Golden Golden Lakes to head west on Okeechobee.

Firefighters had to cut out the left side of the bus to free some of the passengers.
