Senior citizens learn about available services

About 50 area senior citizens flocked to Macon City Hall on Tuesday for a forum on services available to them.

Some of them learned about programs they didn't know existed. Others took an opportunity to give feedback to officials with various programs.

A longer version of the event -- a senior citizens summit -- has been discussed, and Mayor Jack Ellis has said repeatedly that he would like the city to build a new senior center to coalesce services. Anyone with feedback on senior citizen programs in Macon and Bibb County may call the parks and recreation department at (478) 751-9280, said Mike Anthony, the city's chief administrative officer.

Much of the discussion Tuesday centered on programs designed to help senior citizens live on their own and in their own homes. "Some (of the services) I didn't know, but some I knew," said Azelene Lowe, who attended the forum. "It was very interesting."
