| Town honors
exceptional citizens FAIRFIELD -- Pat Carroll is usually
smiling, but his smile was especially wide Wednesday afternoon.
Carroll, a retired Fairfield police captain, harbormaster of Southport
Harbor and longtime emcee of the town's Memorial Day parade, was
named "Fairfielder of the Year."
"There are dozens upon dozens of people in this town deserving
of this award, and I'm most grateful you have selected me,"
Carroll told the town's Board of Selectmen, which announces the
winner every November.
First Selectman Kenneth Flatto praised Carroll's work with veterans'
organizations and his management of Southport Harbor, and then read
a letter from Selectman Denise Dougiello, who praised Carroll's
"boundless energy and upbeat attitude."
"I know that when Pat Carroll speaks, with that ever-smiling
face, everyone listens," Dougiello wrote.
But Carroll wasn't the only person honored Wednesday.
The selectmen also rolled out the red carpet for Ray Agostino,
the assistant principal at Fairfield Woods Middle School.
Agostino, who has been employed by the town's public school system
for 45 years, was named "Town of Fairfield Employee of the
Year."
"I've seen both the town and the school system change and
progress, and I think, with that partnership, Fairfield has been
a great place for those who want to come here and live," Agostino
said.
Supt. of Schools Ann Clark said Agostino, formerly an interim principal
at Fairfield Woods and Tomlinson middle schools, is a team player
and role model who is known for his sense of humor and energy.
The Board of Selectmen created the two awards in 2004 to recognize
residents and town employees who have made exceptional contributions
to the town.
The selectmen choose the winners from among three finalists selected
by screening committees made up of past and present town officials.
Carl Dickman, a former state representative and selectman, was
named Fairfielder of the Year in 2004, and Ann Carter, a longtime
town volunteer and advocate for the environment, received the award
posthumously in 2005.
Past Town of Fairfield Employees of the Year include Barbara Brosnan,
a longtime public health nurse, in 2004 and, in 2005, Charles Savoid,
who works in the Engineering Department, and Theresa "Terry"
Dunn, a longtime secretary in the Public Works Department.
